Holophone Launches New H2-PRO Surround Sound Microphone

Revolutionary and patented microphone becomes the only product now available that records up to 7.1 channels of discrete surround sound.

Toronto, Ontario, CANADA April 13, 2004– Holophone, a division of Rising Sun Productions, Ltd., today formally announced the introduction of the Holophone H2-PRO Surround Microphone. This revolutionary and patented new microphone capable of recording up to 7.1 channels of discrete surround sound for all professional audio applications (standard television, DTV, HDTV, radio, music, project studios/engineers, and film location recording) will be launched at next week's National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas. Holophone is partnering with SRS Labs at NAB, booth #N1502 (located just inside the door to the North Hall off the main concourse of the LVCC) where Holophone representatives will showcase the H2-PRO from April 19 –22.

"We are thrilled to be launching our new Holophone H2-PRO at this year's NAB," stated Jonathan Godfrey, CEO of Holophone. "The H2-PRO is a very cool surround sound audio capture device, and it is the culmination of years of development and an intense beta testing period with leading broadcasters and audio professionals around the world." Mr. Godfrey further commented, "We've worked hard to introduce a product that meets the growing needs of all markets to record and distribute high-quality Surround Sound. It appears that the time is right for the H2-PRO."

The H2-PRO Surround Sound Microphone improves upon Holophone's beta system with a sleek new design that maintains the patented "head" shape, adds eight channel recording capability (5.1-channels plus a top channel and a center-rear channel), and has an improved connector and handle. The easy to use Holophone H2-PRO is a stand-alone Surround Sound microphone designed specifically for audio professionals to capture up to eight channels of discrete Surround Sound. It features eight XLR microphone connectors, which are entirely compatible with all multichannel I/O devices such as hard disc recorders, preamplifiers, and mixing boards that supply phantom power. Users can plug the Holophone H2-PRO directly into their own equipment and be recording quickly, easily and with superior results. Priced at $6000.00 US MSRP, the Holophone H2-PRO will begin shipping by July of this year.

The prototype H-1 Holophone Surround Sound recording system (with only 6.1 channel recording capability) was aggressively beta tested around the world during the past two years on a variety of projects ranging from live television and radio broadcasts to live music recording for HDTV broadcast and DVD. It received positive feedback for its performance, high quality recordings, and ease of use.

Mr. Akira Fukada, Chief Engineer, Production Engineering Department at NHK, Japan Broadcasting Corporation, Tokyo, recorded the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra with the Holophone last year for a 5.1 surround sound special drama program for HDTV broadcast. He compared a number of microphones and commented, "The sound localization of the Holophone was nice, smooth and natural."
While an Engineer at NHK, Mr. Kamekawa, now Assistant Professor at the Tokyo Art University, further evaluated the Holophone system in a variety of conditions and stated, "Holophone is a surprising product, not only the unique appearance, it could record 5.1 or 6.1 channels, including a top channel by only a single unit. We have tested it for piano recording at a concert hall. Ambience presentation was quite natural and localization of sound sources nicely matches the speaker-placement defined by ITU-R." Mr. Kamekawa continues, "The compactness is a prime advantage for field recording."

Here in the United States, Mr. Mark Cochi, Production Mixer at RDR Audio used the Holophone H-1 system for three different ESPN X-Game Surround Sound broadcasts. "The Holophone recording system gives me an incredibly strong and realistic surround platform to build a mix upon for broadcast. This mic allows me to use a single location mic with multiple outputs, and add spot miking on top." Continues Mr. Cochi, "With the Holophone tracks as the base of the mix, the sound is bigger than the picture."

For a DVD Music project recorded in April of last year in an Amsterdam Club, Mr. Francois Lamoureaux of Fogo/Enliven Entertainment had this to say about his experience with the Holophone H-1 prototype system, "As I was preparing to record Branford Marsalis' version of A Love Supreme for DVD, I found out about the Holophone, and it seemed to offer much promise. The recording now finished and mixed, I can tell you that this thing has blown everyone away! It puts you right there in the club in a way that a bunch of room mics alone simply cannot convey; plus it was easy to use and set-up to boot!" The Love Supreme DVD is scheduled for release later this year.
